If you are not already a vegetarian or vegan, tofu may be a bit of a mystery food. When I transitioned to a whole food plant-based diet, I had no idea what tofu was or how to use it. So, over the years, I've had to learn. Now it is one of my favorite plant-based superfoods!
What is tofu?
Tofu is a plant-based food made out of soy. It is made by coagulating soy milk, and the resulting curds are then pressed into a solid block. Tofu comes in a variety of firmness, which simply means how much water remains in the block. These consist of; silken, soft, firm and extra firm.
Is tofu vegan?
Yes. Tofu is indeed vegan. That means it is void of any animal products. You must be cautious though if you are buying a seasoned or marinated tofu. Read the label carefully to make sure none of the seasonings or marinades are animal-based.
Is tofu gluten-free?
Yes. Tofu in and of itself is gluten-free. But again look carefully at the label to make sure no gluten-based ingredients were added if it is seasoned or marinated.
What does tofu taste like?
Tofu is often touted as being very bland by itself. It does, however, easily absorb the flavors of whatever it is cooked with, making it a great ingredient for marinades and stir-fries.
What is the texture of tofu?
The texture of tofu depends on its firmness. While silken tofu has the consistency of puddling or yogurt, extra firm tofu has a more chewy texture.
What are the health benefits of tofu?
Tofu has a list of great health benefits and has been a staple in many cultures around the world.
- Protein-rich - Tofu is an excellent source of protein and is actually considered a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids your body can't produce on its own. This makes it an easy protein source for vegetarians and vegans.
- Lowers Cholesterol - Studies suggest soy protein in tofu helps lower bad (LDL) cholesterol levels, reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Weight management - Tofu is low calorie and high protein content, which can help you feel fuller for longer, which may aid in weight management efforts.
- Anti-cancer - Some research suggests isoflavones in soy may be protective against certain hormone-related cancers.
Tofu, and soy in general, is a great health-promoting food choice! Give it a try and discover the joy of soy today!
